Intersections of violence and women’s empowerment and challenges to reduce violence against women in Afghanistan

Afghanistan remains a deeply patriarchal and heteronormative society with strict codes of gender segregation and policing of women’s mobility and sexuality. Women’s economic autonomy is severely limited and many women experience violence. Eva Noble will present results from an impact evaluation of a 12-month social and economic empowerment program for marginalized women in Afghanistan, looking at women’s experiences of intimate partner violence, gender attitudes, decision-making, and economic outcomes. She will additionally discuss the challenges and barriers to reducing violence against women, based on qualitative research.

Eva Noble is the Associate Director of Research and Learning at Women for Women International where she oversees the organization’s research portfolio with projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, and Afghanistan. Eva has conducted research and evaluations for nine years on topics including women’s economic and social empowerment, child protection in emergencies, violence against women and girls, and maternal, neonatal and child health. She has previously worked with academic teams including the CPC Learning Network at Columbia University and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and with non-profits including Innovations for Poverty Action, the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children. She has an MPH from Columbia University with focus on public health and humanitarian assistance.
